Honoring a Legacy, Cultivating a Future: The Emeritus Prof. S.K Adeyoju Memorial Arboretum

Date: 2025

In 2025, GADEF proudly embarked on a groundbreaking partnership project dedicated to environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation. In collaboration with Ekiti State University, the Forestry Association of Nigeria, and the Forestry Commission Ekiti State, we are establishing the Emeritus Prof. S.K Adeyoju Memorial Arboretum—a living tribute to a revered figure in conservation and a beacon for sustainable environmental practices.

A Living Memorial for Conservation and Education

The Emeritus Prof. S.K Adeyoju Memorial Arboretum is more than just a park; it is a vibrant, evolving sanctuary designed to preserve our region’s biodiversity. This arboretum will serve as an outdoor laboratory where diverse indigenous tree species are nurtured and showcased. By focusing on in-situ conservation, we are committed to maintaining the natural integrity of these species while providing a space for education, research, and community engagement.

Our Collaborative Approach

The success of this project rests on the strength of our partnerships.

  • Ekiti State University contributes academic expertise and research support, ensuring that the arboretum becomes a hub of learning and innovation.
  • Forestry Association of Nigeria offers valuable insights into sustainable forestry practices, guiding our conservation strategies.
  • Forestry Commission Ekiti State plays a key role in implementing regulatory and technical frameworks necessary for the arboretum’s long-term success.

GADEF is leading this initiative with the provision of technical assistance and the raising of seedlings, ensuring that every step of the project is rooted in sustainable practices and environmental best practices.

Our Involvement

  • Raising of Seedlings: GADEF is actively involved in cultivating a diverse range of indigenous tree seedlings that will form the foundation of the arboretum. This effort not only aids in the restoration of local biodiversity but also creates opportunities for community participation in hands-on conservation work.
  • Technical Assistance: Our team is providing expert guidance on planting techniques, nursery management, and sustainable maintenance practices. This support ensures that the arboretum will thrive as a dynamic ecosystem for years to come.

The Vision Ahead

The Emeritus Prof. S.K Adeyoju Memorial Arboretum is currently underway, with ongoing efforts to integrate community development and environmental education into every facet of the project. As the arboretum grows, it will serve as a model for collaborative conservation initiatives, highlighting how partnerships between academic institutions, government bodies, and non-governmental organizations can create lasting, positive impacts on our natural environment.
